night of the pommesd"In search of down-to-earth food experiences, this month I'm in Orne, a part of rural inland Normandy centred on the half timbered hamlet of Camembert.

As well as gooey cheese, the Orne has a name for apples, which brings me to the town of Vimoutieres and it's annual Foire de la Pomme.

I stayed at a wonderful chambres dhotes run by an English couple; Diana Wordsworth cooks like an angel, and their three rooms are delightfully peaceful."

"Les Gains Bed and Breakfast located near Argenten in Normandy and set in the tranquil countryside of cider apple orchards and rolling green valleys.

In a 17th century farmhouse on a working sheep farm, a very warm english couple provides three bedrooms with facilities en-suite plus wonderful home cooking.

A wonderful base for staying in Normandy."

"There's a homemade elderflower cordial if you arrive on a hot day, or the smell of fesh bed may greet you: this converted manor farm with its pigeon tower and duck stream has a lived-in family feel. Your hosts have 800 sheep and 300 apple trees, work hard and are well integrated, as are their daughters.

Bedrooms in the old cheese dairy are pretty, painted in light colours with touches of fantaisie and Diana's decorative stencils. Breakfast is superb, dinner with your lovely hosts is worth lingering over; both happen under the pergola in fine weather. Laid back, rural and bucolic."
